Bat

The bat lives in darkness and finds its way by sound, which makes it a creature of the night senses and the hidden world. Agrippa counts it among Saturn's creatures: solitary, nocturnal, and at home in caves and ruins. In modern practice it stands for initiation, rebirth through darkness, and trusting perception beyond sight.

Uses

• Initiation and passage through endings
• Navigating confusion by intuition
• Night work and dream journeys
• Protection of the home at night

Working with it

Work with the bat on a Saturday night or a dark moon. Sit in full darkness with a single black candle, then snuff it and listen: let the sounds of the room map the space for you. Ask the bat to guide you through what you cannot yet see.
